| Designed specifically to provide highly effective personal defense for women and teens, lighter men, and even for children, regardless of size, Shindo incorporates some of the most effective techniques from several "ancestral" Asian fighting traditions. Shindo is a practical, effective, and natural system of unarmed self-defense drawn from a wide variety of classical Asian martial arts, including: | ||||||||||||

Tao-Zen Ryu Shindo is
the system of martial arts taught at the Academy. Shindo (properly
pronounced "sheen-dow") translates variously as "Way of
Reality" or "Path of Truth".
The eclectic mix of sources influencing the development of Shindo provides a broadly comprehensive range of tactical responses to a wide variety of attack situations, including armed attacks and attacks by multiple opponents. Originally developed for (and tested in) on-the-street tactical police applications, Shindo facilitates split-second neutralization of physical confrontations, regardless of the relative size and strength of either the attacker or the defender. |

Shindo focuses on effective self-defense; it is not a sport or a game. The tactics and techniques of Shindo are specifically designed to work for everyone--regardless of size or relative strength, making Shindo an ideal defensive art for women, teens, kids, and lighter men. Shindo relies on timing, skill, coordination, focus, and leverage, rather than on muscle strength or size, coordinating and focusing all of your powers--mind, body, and spirit. Shindo teaches physical and mental discipline, the practical application of traditional oriental philosophy, and the timeless traditions of the classical oriental warrior arts. Shindo, however, is about much more than physical protection alone. Beyond the quiet confidence that comes with a reliable command of effective self-defense, Shindo practitioners enjoy other important health benefits, including: |

In addition to physical benefits, Shindo practitioners regularly report keener perception, sharpened mental focus, and a pervading sense of internal calm and "centeredness" as corollaries to their training. The Academy also focuses traditional emphasis on character development and social skills, such as personal discipline; individual responsibility; and a profound respect for self and others. |
