Summer Camp 2007

This year's summer camp will again be held at Millersylvania State Park near
Olympia, the beautiful, wooded campground on the lakeshore which we have become quite fond of.

Deep Lake at Millersylvania State Park Millersylvania State Park

This year's camp will be a staggering 5 days long!

The Itinerary has been updated--please check it out!

This gives us the opportunity to hold a variety of workshops, some never before taught at our Academy.

Here is a link to the Itinerary so far.

There are some sections that have yet to be finalized (we need instructors and campsite locations, please contact Cho Kyo Sa Deja Hanson to volunteer!), but this should help Shindoka figure out what they would like to participate in, and perhaps what day they would like to arrive at Camp this year.

Also, it would be great if we could have some activities for our non-Shindoka guests this year. All I've been able to think of is Red Rover, but any and all suggestions are welcome--please contact Cho Kyo Sa Deja Hanson with your ideas. Volunteers would also be needed (CKS Anna Johnson and Tara Price, I'm looking in your direction), but you can participate as well as supervise.

A few items from Sabum Nim:

1) Do the showers at the camp take tokens or quarters? Does anyone remember?

2) Natural mosquito "discouragers" include citronella, catnip, and lemon grass preparations, available at larger grocery stores and local nurseries. They also make candles containing this stuff that work rather well, locally.

3) Wednesday night BBQ and Thursday morning breakfast (thank you, Kyo Sa Nim Charles!) will be $10/person. This includes both meals.

2007 Workshops Offered:

Morning T'ai C'hi

Led by Cho Kyo Sa Tara Price, this morning warm-up is a favorite of past camps.

Morning Intensive Training Workshop

A new addition to Summer Camp!
Led by Cho Kyo Sa Kai Bublitz, this intensive training workshop will focus on increasing physical stamina and endurance through stance work and drills. Make sure to bring some water!

Wisdom Games

A favorite of the kids, this game welcomes all participants, as the Kohei gather "Wisdom" from Sempei and other elders.

Ninja Games

A new addition to Summer Camp!
Shindoka play the roles of monks on a quest to deliver their "scrolls" to the "temples". Either individually or in teams, Shindoka navigate through the park, and must win challenges against other Shindoka! This can involve both barehands and weapons sparring, with the victor gaining the "scrolls" of those they've defeated. Whoever makes it to all the temples with their scrolls, wins!
Please bring weapons and protective gear, especially if you are under 18.

Underwater Forms

A new addition to Summer Camp!
Led by Sabum Nim, this class places Shindoka shoulder-deep in water, as they learn to understand the kinetics involved by comparing the difference of resistance in water versus air. This workshop will also touch on sensing and directing c'hi. This is an excellent class for pregnant women!
Don't forget your swimsuit and Aqua Socks!

Hard/External Workshop

A new addition to Summer Camp!
Led by Kyo Sa Nim Sara Young-Buck, this class will focus on the harder aspects of our style. Blocks, punches, kicks, and dynamic movement will be discussed and practiced.

Internal/C'hi Workshop

A new addition to Summer Camp!
Led by Sabum Nim, this class will focus on the softer aspects of our style. C'hi sensing, flow, and direction, co-option of energy, and much more will be discussed and practiced.

Barehands Sparring

Led by Kyo Sa Nim Sara Young-Buck, this class will focus on how to spar in a one-on-one situation. Depending on the Shindoka participating, training techniques will range from learning how to take a hit, one- and two-step sparring, and formal "point" sparring.
Protective gear is required.

Rondori Sparring

Led by Cho Kyo Sa Anna Johnson, this class will focus on defending against multiple attackers. Rondori, also known as "Chinatown", is frequently seen during Sempei belt tests.
Protective gear is required.

Bo Sparring

Led by Kyo Sa Nim Charles Carter, this Summer Camp favorite will focus not only on our Bo Form, but also on how to effectively combat with a bo-wielding opponent.
Be sure to bring your Bo staff!

Shinai Sparring

Led by Sabum Nim (and Kyo Sa Nim Suzanne Martin?), this class will focus on the proper technique and etiquette of Kempo. Depending on the Shindoka participating, training techniques will range from learning how to draw and sheathe the shinai, the difference between legal and illegal targets, how to give and receive strikes, basic blocking, feints, and point sparring.
Protective gear is required, and don't forget to bring your shinai!

Chain Workshop

A new addition to Summer Camp!
Led by Kyo Sa Nim Sara Young-Buck, this workshop will focus on our most difficult weapon to master.

Glowstick Night Forms/Sparring

Led by Cho Kyo Sa Anna Johnson and Cho Kyo Sa Deja Hanson, this workshop takes place after dark. Participants will wear glow stick bracelets (provided), and practice forms and slow- to medium-speed sparring. Practicing without the aid of your eyes can increase your awareness of c'hi flow, and help you access your other senses when defending against an opponent. And, of course, it looks really cool!
