Poulsbo School (Headquarters Dojang)

Announcements

Archery Range Opens!

The first arrows flew at the new archery range on October 1, thanks to the efforts and generosity of several Shindoka, including Mike Wytko, Holly Geiger, and James Dexter. Both traditional recurve and the newer compound bows are welcome at the range; pull weights should range from 10-50 pounds for target work. Hunting bows are too powerful for this application. The range will also be used, weather permitting, for long-range techniques with other traditional weapons, including bo, naginata, gusare, throwing knives and stars, and other ancient weaponry. See your instructor for range rules.

Sabum Nim Signed to Book Contract

Master Townsend has been offered a book contract by North Atlantic Books, one of the largest publishers of martial arts titles in the U.S. The book's working title, Self-Defense for Peaceable People, pretty much says it all. The book is currently slated for the publisher's Spring release calendar, and should be in local stores early next year. Introducing the tactics and techniques of Tao-Zen Ryu Shindo to the world, the book is designed to provide very basic self-defense instruction to people who may not have the advantage of access to a qualified instructor or a good school, or who, for whatever reasons, are not able to study martial arts at the present time. The book will also be used as a textbook in many other applications, including self-defense workshops and demonstrations for professional women and public school students, which are being planned for next year under the Academy's new S-I (Safety First) program.

Bo Making Workshop is Big Hit

Several Shindoka with their new bo staffs

Okay; --pun intended. Cho Kyo Sa Brian Johnson, assisted by other instructors and senior students, ran an all-day bo-making workshop on September 17. Starting early on, students selected square shafts of clear purple heartwood and learned how to plane, shave, sand, and shape them down into the traditional round bo we are used to seeing--the old-fashioned, hard way--by hand. The result were beautiful weapons, each invested with many hours of labor and love be each individual warrior, to his and her own taste. Finish work can proceed over the winter in spare hours as the bo are worked and polished to a fine sheen.

Poulsbo Class Schedule
